Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy in Mumbai

The pelvic floor is the group of muscles that supports the bladder, bowel and uterus and helps control leakage. When these muscles are weak, tight or poorly coordinated, physiotherapy can retrain them.

What pelvic floor physiotherapy helps with

  • Stress leakage when coughing, sneezing, running or lifting
  • Urgency and frequent urination
  • Pelvic pain, pain with intercourse or tailbone pain
  • Postpartum recovery, including abdominal separation
  • Pre and post prostate surgery rehabilitation
  • Constipation and bowel control problems

What the assessment is like

The assessment starts with a conversation about symptoms, bladder and bowel habits, pregnancy history and pain. It may include an external examination of posture, breathing and hip movement. Internal examination is only done with your explicit consent, and you can decline any part of it without losing the value of the session.

Treatment approach

  1. 1Identify whether the muscles are weak, overactive or poorly coordinated.
  2. 2Teach correct contraction and relaxation, not just repeated squeezing.
  3. 3Build strength and endurance progressively.
  4. 4Retrain breathing, pressure management and lifting technique.
  5. 5Progress to running, gym work and daily activities without leakage.

Postpartum timing

A postpartum assessment is usually useful around six weeks after delivery, or earlier if there is pain, heaviness or leakage. Caesarean birth does not remove the need for pelvic floor assessment, because pregnancy itself loads the floor.

About this guidance

This page is general information about physiotherapy for this problem, not a diagnosis. An assessment is the only way to know what is driving your symptoms and what treatment suits you.

Questions people ask

Is pelvic floor physiotherapy uncomfortable?

It should not be painful. Internal assessment is optional and done only with consent. Most of the session is education, movement and exercise.

Does it help with leakage after childbirth?

Pelvic floor muscle training is first-line care for stress leakage and is supported by clinical guidance. Many people improve with a supervised program over eight to twelve weeks.

Can men have pelvic floor physiotherapy?

Yes. It is used for pelvic pain, bladder control and recovery after prostate surgery.
