Back Pain Treatment in Mumbai

Most back pain is not caused by serious damage, and most people improve without surgery. A physiotherapy assessment works out which movement, load or nerve is involved, then treats it and gives you a plan to keep it from returning.

When back pain needs treatment, and when it needs urgent care

Ordinary mechanical back pain improves with movement and time. It is safe to stay active, and bed rest for more than a day or two usually makes it worse. Physiotherapy helps when the pain keeps returning, has lasted more than a few weeks, or is limiting work, sleep or training.

A small number of cases need urgent medical review. Seek emergency care for loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, progressive weakness in both legs, or back pain after a significant fall or accident. These are red flags for a serious cause and should not wait for a physiotherapy appointment.

What is usually involved

The assessment looks at movement, strength, nerve sensitivity and how you load your spine through the day. Treatment combines hands-on work for pain and stiffness with exercises that rebuild tolerance, plus practical changes to sitting, lifting and training.

  • Manual therapy and targeted soft tissue work for pain relief
  • Progressive strength work for the trunk, hips and legs
  • Nerve mobilisation when symptoms travel into the leg
  • Graded return to walking, gym work, sport and lifting
  • Advice on posture, sleep positions and desk setup that you can actually keep

How long does recovery take?

A first episode of mechanical back pain often settles within two to six weeks. Long-standing or recurrent pain takes longer, usually eight to twelve weeks of consistent work, because strength and confidence rebuild slowly. The aim is not a single pain-free day but a back that tolerates normal life again.

What we will not do

We will not promise a cure in one session, and we will not keep adding appointments without review. If your presentation needs imaging or a specialist opinion, we will say so. If an exercise is making you worse, the plan changes.

About this guidance

This page is general information about physiotherapy for this problem, not a diagnosis. An assessment is the only way to know what is driving your symptoms and what treatment suits you.

Questions people ask

Should I rest or keep moving with back pain?

Keep moving within what you can tolerate. Short walks and normal daily activity are usually better than bed rest. Avoid heavy lifting and positions that clearly increase the pain until you have been assessed.

Do I need an MRI before physiotherapy?

Usually not. Most back pain can be assessed clinically. Imaging is more useful when there are red flags, nerve symptoms that are not improving, or a planned procedure.

Can physiotherapy help a slipped disc?

Yes, for most people. Many disc-related symptoms settle with conservative care. Physiotherapy focuses on nerve symptoms, movement and strength, and will refer you on if surgery is being considered.
